Sergio Vázquez Montes de Oca was born in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona). He graduated in Computer Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and earned a master's in Data Science Methodology from the Barcelona School of Economics. He later spent two years at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute, working on predictive models for immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) response in bladder cancer. Sergio is now pursuing his PhD at the Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology in Bern, as part of Prof. Inti Zlobec’s group. His PhD is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Maria Rodríguez Martínez and is part of the MIRACLE project, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. His research focuses on developing interpretable deep learning models for multi-omics data, with a specific emphasis on cardiometabolic disease (CMD). The goal of his work is to create models that identify key patterns in single-cell and spatial data, improving predictions and treatment decisions. Sergio is also tackling challenges related to model reliability and interpretability, contributing to more robust and impactful AI applications in clinical settings.
